Identifying Apple models (iPad, iPhone)
Apple fleets usually import with a model identifier like iPad12,1 instead of a name you can read, and with no lifecycle dates at all. Identify model turns that into the real model name, the date Apple shipped it, and an estimated end of support.
One device
Open the device and click Identify model. It shows exactly what it will fill in before writing anything, so nothing changes until you say so.
A whole fleet
Devices → Identify Apple models does the same across every Apple device at once. It reports how many it can help with, and a sample of the changes, before applying.
It only fills blanks
Anything already recorded is left exactly as it is. Run it as often as you like — a second pass simply finds less to do.

Purchase date is never touched. A release date is when Apple shipped the model, not when your district bought it — a 2021 iPad bought in 2024 is three years newer than its release date suggests. Writing one into the other would age the device in the forecast and ask for replacement money early, so the two are kept as separate fields.

End of support is an estimate, labelled as one everywhere it appears, and the forecast reports it separately from a real Chromebook AUE. If you know better, edit the device and set the EOL date yourself — your value always wins.

Apple randomised serial numbers around 2021, so a serial no longer says which model it is. This works from the model identifier your MDM exported, or a recognisable model name. A device with neither is left alone rather than guessed at.
